Kyudo Notebook: Shinsa Questions for Mushitei

無指定

This level includes complete beginners taking their first shinsa as well as mostly younger students who are working their way through they kyu levels. The rumour is that students tended to be given the kyu levels while adults (if they pass) are normally given shodan, but there has been some push back about that since some students (often with years of experience) will naturally have better shooting form than some beginning adults, and shodan should mean something. You can find the criteria for each of the levels at the back of the Kyudo Kyohon.

As for the questions, normally at our shinsa there is a menu of five and the examiners choose two from those five for all of the candidates then answer. Nobody knows which two it will be until the last minute. In Japanese the answers are usually about 200 characters, so 3-4 lines. English is usually twice as verbose, so figure about a paragraph? I’m not sure. Obviously some, where you’re just listing things, will only be as long as the list.
